Beat Generation Quotes
"Who are all these strange ghosts rooted to the silly little adventure of earth with me?"— Jack Kerouac
"Rather, I think one should write, as nearly as possible, as if he were the first person on earth and was humbly and sincerly putting on paper that which he saw and experienced and loved and lost; what his passing thoughts were and his sorrows and desires."— Neal Cassady to Jack Kerouac
"To rebel! That is the immediate objective of poets! We can not wait and will not be held back...The "poetic marvelous" and the unconscious are the true inspirers of rebels and poets."—Philip Lamantia
"We had gone beyond a point of no return- and we were ready for it, for a point of no return...We wanted voice and we wanted vision."—Michael McClure
". . . In this modern jazz, they heard something rebel and
nameless that spoke for them, and their lives knew a
gospel for the first time. It was more than a music;
it became an attitude toward life, a way of walking, a
language and a costume; and these introverted kids...
now felt somewhere at last."
—John Clellon Holmes
"when Mrs Kindhead comes to collect for the Community Chest
grab her and tell her There are unfavorable omens in the sky!
And when the mayor comes to get my vote tell him
When are you going to stop people killing whales!"-Gregory Corso
"Sometime in the last twenty years the best brains of the Occident discovered to their amazement that we live in an Environment." -Gary Snyder
"Probably the closest things to perfection are the huge absolutely empty holes that astronomers have recently discovered in space. If there's nothing there, how can anything go wrong?" -Richard Brautigan
“Boring damned people. All over the earth. Propagating more boring damned people. What a horror show. The earth swarmed with them.”
-Charles Bukowski
"A paranoid-schizophrenic is a guy who just found out what’s going on." -William S. Burroughs
"I became the unnatural son of a few score of beaten men."
-Neal Cassady
"The True Rebel never advertises it. He prefers his joy to Missionary Work". -Lew Welch
" If you want to be hip my cute young lovely hens
then--you must own a copy of Howl--
you must have a copy of Jack (on the road) Kerouac
on your shelf and know thouself." - Ted Joans (Teducation)
